Athens: Heritage and Modernity June 23 – July 4, 2013

Exploration of the coexistence between historic and modern Athens

Dear Colleague,

I would like to inform you about our program in Athens, Greece, this summer. This 12 day visit of Athens will be a thoughtful exploration of the history and preservation and conservation issues facing the city, organized around a series of lectures and visits lead by some of the top Athenian archaeologists, architects, historians, conservators and planners who have been dealing with the problem of preserving monuments and cultural heritage in the midst of a growing modern city. Our deadline for applying is April 30, 2013.

The faculty of our program includes Dr. Manolis Korres, Chief Architect on the Acropolis Restoration Project, who will lead lectures and visits to the Acropolis area. Please visit our website and syllabus to see a complete list of faculty, lectures and visits.

The program is intended for people studying, or professionally involved in, the fields of: History, Archaeology, Architecture Art History, Architecture, Urban Planning, Anthropology, Conservation and Historic Preservation, but is also open for people with a general interest in preservation.

Internship Opportunity with Ft. Bend County Museum Association

Fort Bend County Museum Association - 2013 Fall Internship

The Fort Bend County Museum Association (FBCMA) announces a fall internship opening for 2013 (staff will work with candidate on timeframe). The FBCMA operates the Fort Bend County Museum and the George Ranch Historical Park. Candidate will have the chance to assist with projects (collections care, exhibition development, interpretation research and facilitation, planning and presentation of educational programming, visitor services, special event coordination, marketing, and evaluation of programs and services) for an accredited organization that operates a traditional county museum, a historic house museum and a major outdoor living history museum. Work will primarily take place at the George Ranch Historical Park but may extend to other sites.

Preferred Candidate: Will be a graduate candidate in museum studies or public history from an accredited institution, with a focus/interest in collections management, museum education or museum exhibition. Experience working in museums preferred. Undergraduate candidates will be considered only if no graduate candidate is identified. The FBCMA would prefer to run the internship over the fall session, roughly from July through early December (some flexibility is possible in scheduling). FBCMA Chief Curator will work with candidate to establish course credit and meet appropriate requirements.

Work Week:  Approximately 40 hours per week, M-F, with weekend work possible

Compensation: Housing will be provided at the George Ranch Historical Park. A $100/wk stipend is also available.

Public History Gathering on March 21st

Internships with the Texas Historical Commission

For those of you looking for internship opportunities:

The Texas Historical Commission (THC) Internship Program is designed to provide undergraduate and graduate level students unpaid internships within a selected agency division or program; thereby exposing them to the benefits of choosing historic preservation as a career. This is in compliance with the mission of the THC to protect and preserve the state’s historic and prehistoric resources for the use, education, enjoyment and economic benefit of present and future generations.

Internships can include, but are not limited to, practical experience in archeology, architecture, community development, historic preservation, history, economic development and planning, marketing communications, and administration. By working closely with THC staff, students should gain hands-on knowledge relating to their coursework in a specific field.
